When I signed up for this class I didn’t know what to really expect. Then after a few weeks I really started to learn a lot. I learned so much about the internet and different search tools. I learned how to improve my searches and how to specify exactly what I wanted in the search window and almost every time what I wanted appeared. Before this class I never blogged or visited anyone else’s blog, so I learned that they can really be informative. I also re-learned how to write a good research paper and how to site my sources within my paper.
I still have 60 more hours to go for my degree, so I know I’ll have to write more papers. I think this class has prepared me to write more and better papers. I also think this class has helped me to write better reports at work. Overall, I thought this was a great class and it taught me a lot about writing the proper way.

13: Reporting on the Application Project
My application project is going to be a short story. My story will start two days prior to a body building contest. It will include everything that a bodybuilder must do and go through to prepare for the main event. It will then close with the day show and night show.
Right now I have pretty much all of my research done. I have interviewed some bodybuilders on everything they do a few days before their show. I also looked on the internet on some IFBB pro bodybuilders to see some of the things they do.
All I have to do now is put my story together. I have to put the all of information together and figure how exactly I want to right my story. I also have to put together my work cited page.

11b: Planning Your Application Project
Right now I am leaning towards writing a short story. I would like the story to be about a bodybuilding contest. The story will cover a few days before the contest and all of the events that take place. Also the day of and the night show would be included in the story. I feel this topic would make an interesting story.
Again I apologize for this being a day late do to computer problems.

11a: Reporting on Your Progress
I would have to say everything is going well. I submitted my rough draft and I feel it is pretty good. I don’t think I am to far away from the final draft. All my research is complete and my interviews are done. I still want to read the comments that the other students left for me, and then I’ll go from there.
Sorry my post are a day late but my computer got a virus and Geek Squad just got done fixing it for me again I apologize.

10a: Reporting on Your Field Research
For my field research I conducted a interview with a person who would like to remain anonymous. The interview went very well and was very informative. Some of the questions I asked are as followed.
How long have you been involved in the sport?
When was the first time you competed?
What do you think of the use of over the counter supplements?
What do you think of the use of steroids?
What is your contest diet like?
What types of effects has the sport played on your personal life?
How has the sport affected your overall psyche?
What side effects have you experienced from the use of supplements?
Has the sport improved your overall health?
What has the sport done for you?
What advice would you give someone wanting to get involved in bodybuilding?
What does it take to get ready for a competition?

9a: Writing Thesis Statements
Many think bodybuilding is just lifting weights in the gym however; they don’t know what really takes to be a top level competitive bodybuilder there are many positive and negative aspects to the sport.
It takes months to get ready for one night of bodybuilding competition the entire process can be consuming and costly not only to ones pockets but to their health as well.
It has been said that bodybuilding is the toughest sport in the world today in order to compete it takes self motivation, discipline, control, and a drive like no other to succeed.

8a: Quoting, Paraphrasing, and Summarizing
While certainly not as intense, bodybuilding can be likened to the pain experienced during short labor: pain can be very intense but will immediately go away after each set. If you want to increase the size of your muscular frame, you will have to be mentally prepared for intense, physical discomfort. But rest assured, it will go away as soon as the set is complete.
http://www.humankinetics.com/products/showexcerpt.cfm?excerpt_id=3009
1.“While certainly not as intense [as hard labor], bodybuilding can be linked to the pain experiences during sort labor”. When a bodybuilder presses a barbell it can be compared to the same movement as a carpenter lifting a piece of lumber. Both the bodybuilder and the carpenter need to mentally prepare their selves to perform the lift. Mentally telling yourself that you can do something will help someone overcome any pain and discomfort. Shortly after the movement is complete any pain and discomfort will disappear.
2. While certainly not as difficult, bodybuilding can cause the same pain found when performing short labor. The pain is very intense but will disappear after the movement is complete. If someone wants to add muscle to their frame then they will have to be strong not only physically but mentally.
3. The pain experienced when bodybuilding has been compared to the same pain experienced during hard labor. If someone wants to add muscle they must be mentally strong to prepare themselves for the pain. However, once the movement is complete the pain will go away.

7b: Evaluating Sources
Name(s) of author - Blair WhitmarshTitle and subtitle of the book - Mind and Muscle: Psych up, Build UpEdition number or information - 1Number(s) of volume used – n/aName of series – n/aPlace of publication (include state if needed)Name of publisher – Human KineticsDate of publication – 2001
When reading this book I feel the author makes some good points and the evidence is useful. I think the author is knowledgeable about this topic, he seems to have a good knowledge ad past experiences on my topic. The author also seems to be affiliated with some respectable agencies within the topic and had some good ideas. I think the publisher can be trusted because of were the book was published.
www.bodybuilding.com
Overall, this is a great site I use it often. So far I have found some really good articles within the site. I think most of the authors are well educated on the subjects they write about. I checked out one author by the name of Clayton South, he has written many articles for bodybuilding.com, also he has had some of his articles published in magazines. When checking it seems like most of the articles on bodybuilding.com are updated often with new information.

6c: Planning Field Research
For my field research I plan on doing two things. First I am going to interview a longtime friend and competitive bodybuilder. Some of the questions I plan on asking him are his brief history on bodybuilding? I also want to ask him about the effects that bodybuilding has on the body i.e. dieting, steroids, heavy weights, and cardio? I also plan on asking him about the mind and how big of factor it is when bodybuilding? After interviewing I plan on attending a local bodybuilding show in April. At the show I want to ask some of the competitors about what it took to get ready for the show? I also want to ask them what affects the show had on their body and their lives?
6b: Testing Assigned Search Tool
My metacrawler was Sortfix. I tried various search strings and some turned out to be good and others didn’t bring up a single result. On 3/7/09 I just did a general search of bodybuilding and the google tab produced the most results. Although a lot of results weren’t too relevant I would rate it a 3 out of 5. Next, I searched bodybuilding +mind and Sortfix really narrowed down the information. I would give the search a four out of five because I found the information relevant.
6a: Using Internet Search Tools
The search engines I use regularly are google and msn. Out of the two I like to use google the best, it seems to work the best. It seems like no matter what I type into the search box, the information I wanted always appears below. Also after researching the Sortfix I really found it to be a useful metacrawler. I have never heard of it before and after using it for awhile it impressed me. I liked the power words box, with those suggestions it really helped and gave me new words to enhance my search.

Observations- going to a local gym
Interview- Tim Jay Reese
Public event- attend a bodybuilding show
Field research- for my field research I pan on searching the web, talking with different sources, and going through magazines and newspapers

3b: Writing Search Strings
I tried both the math and the Boolean search methods. For me the math method worked better. I tried the following search strings.

2c: Developing My Research Question
What effects does heavy lifting have on the body and mind? What effects do steroids have on the body and mind? Why do bodybuilders feel the need to use steroids? Why do steroids change the hormones balance in the body? When training for a competition does it take a toll on the body and mind? How does a bodybuilder mentally prepare for dieting? How does a bodybuilder get through workouts when they don’t have any energy to train? Would steroids give them a boost mentally and help them think straight? When taking steroids do bodybuilders feel differently mentally then they would not taking them? Could losing a show make a bodybuilder shut down completely?
2b: Narrowing My Topic
After reading chapter 2b and looking at some of my research I feel that I need to broaden my topic. I think the psyche of bodybuilding is a very limited subject. So I am planning to add steroids as a subtopic. I think this topic is appropriate because steroids are a big part of bodybuilding and steroids seem to play a role on the human psyche. It seems lately many athletes have completely broken down and either killed someone or committed suicide do to the use of steroids. I think by adding this topic to my main topic I should be able to gather enough information for a good research paper.
2a: Exploring My Topic
I search many different websites like flex.com, bodybuilding.com, and musclardevelpment.com. However these sites weren’t to much help when trying to find information on the psyche of a bodybuilder. So I just googled mental bodybuilding and psyche of bodybuilding. I also looked on ask.com and found some information I might be able to use. You can see the websites I found on my delicious account. I also plan on interviewing some bodybuilders I know for the perspective on the psyche of bodybuilding.
Sunday, February 1, 2009
For my research paper I am choosing to write my paper on bodybuilding. Bodybuilding is something I have a passion for and I love to do. By writing this paper I hope to open other peoples mind to the sport because not to many people know about it. I think most people think it is just about working out and getting big, but it is much more than that. I think bodybuilding could be considered one of the hardest sports out there today.
I know that bodybuilding started in the 19th century in parts of Europe. I also know what it takes to compete and to win competitions. Today, bodybuilding is broken down into many different organizations but the best organizations are the NPC for amateurs and the IFFB for professionals. In order to become an IFFB pro a person needs to win a national show as an amateur with that victory they will earn their pro card. When competing it is a long difficult process, many bodybuilders have a strict diet for 12 weeks or longer.
Some things I would like to learn more about are peoples feeling and views about bodybuilding. I would also like to know more about the role that steroids play in the world of bodybuilding. With that being said I want to research how many pros there are that are all natural. Finally, I would like to learn some statistics like how many amateurs there are competing today and what percent of them will turn pro one day.
